What is an Exercise Physiologist?

Exercise Physiologists are your expert specialists in delivering evidence based exercise for rehabilitation and health!!!

An Exercise Physiologist is an Allied Health Professional who has completed 4-5 years of University studies in the human body’s responses to physical activity and exercise. These responses include how the heart, circulation, muscle, nervous and respiratory structures adapt to exercise becoming more effective and efficient with exercise.

Main area of focus

Exercise Physiologists utilise specific therapeutic exercise to prevent and manage medical conditions as well as soft tissue and joint injuries. In simple terms, Exercise Physiologists use exercise as the medicine.  (Refer to common conditions we treat using exercise as the medicine)

Exercise Physiologists not only treat people with medical conditions but they also assist people with their general health, fitness and wellbeing too.

The goals of an Exercise Physiologist are to improve the health, wellbeing, function and quality of life of people through their specialised exercise programs.

Exercise is Medicine

When we think of medicine for the treatment of medical conditions we think of pills.  However, exercise is one of the most powerful medicines in the prevention and managment of medical conditions.  It is also natural and has no side effects if prescribed correctly!!!  General practitioners often recommend exercise as a form of treatment for medical conditions either in conjunction with pills or alone.  Research has proven that exercise at the correct duration and intensity, not only improves quality of life, but it also reduces the risk of developing medical conditions and complications associated with medical conditions.

Exercise Facts

Regular exercise prescribed at the correct duration and intensity can:

  • Significantly improve overall health

  • Decrease the risk of heart disease by 40%

  • Reduce the risk of stroke by 27%

  • Lower the incidence of high blood pressure by almost 50%

  • Reduce the incidence of diabetes by almost 50%

  • Decrease mortality and risk of recurrent breast cancer by almost 50%

  • Reduce the risk of colon cancer by over 60%

  • Lower the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by one-third

  • Reduce depression as effectively as medications or behavioural therapy
